I am begining to really really think that General Ike had an easier time trying to plan the D-Day Invasion than we are having trying to plan our wedding for this month.
Actually, I'm sure of it. Chances are back in the 1940's he didn't have to get Mrs. Ike to agree on what is the appropriate uniform for the VIP Officers during the invasion. He also probably didn't have to spend multiple man hours trying to decide what color the flowers on the sides of the Amphibious Landing Craft should be. In addition, I don't think he had to wait to get back the RSVP's from the American GI's prior to ordering the K Rations from the Caterer to feed everyone during the Invasion. (YOU HAVE YOUR ORDERS SOLIDER NOW MOVE IT! YOU'LL EAT YOUR DAMN RATIONS AND LIKE IT!) Ditto for the D-Day Rehearsal last meal (Dinner?) In addition, he didn't have to decide in advance what presents to get for all his fellow generals once the whole thing was successful. I think he pretty much just said "Why don't you keep some of Hitler's Goodies once we kick his army's butt all over Europe?" (Or at least that's what it seemed like the Members of Easy Company did in "Band of Brothers." when they raided the Furher's wine cellars and art collections)
He also didn't have to decide what music to play during the war. Instead they just played "Flight of the Valkyries" and "Voodoo Child" during helicopter scenes and such. Oops. I think I got confused and just referenced every Vietnam Movie ever made instead.
Anyways, just some random wedding planning thoughts that were going through my mind at this point. Some of my readers wanted to read more blog entries about the wedding and the wedding planning process. So all the war metaphors were the best I could come up with. Hey! I'm just a guy after all.
I remember back when we first got engaged we said that we
wouldn’t be one of those couples that in every conversation they have to
mention something related to their upcoming wedding. My fiancée said that “She
didn’t want everything in our life to be about our wedding.” This sounded great
to me since I have other things in my life that I enjoy that are non-wedding
related. Like Football, Boxing, Beer and Porn (Kidding!)
This would have been a great plan if only we could have actually pulled it off.
Right now the wedding is two months out and there seems to be no end in sight of things that still need to be taken care of. I have also noticed that every weekend I seem to have an ever growing list of wedding related things that require my attention or decision.
Perhaps we were naïve.
It appears to me that any marriage, with the exception of eloping, would probably require the same amount of time and money that I grossly underestimated.
So for all my friends who I haven’t seen in the last couple months I apologize. I have let the wedding take more of my life than I anticipated. Good news is that in 2 more months it will be completed and we can see each other again. (If she lets me. Just Kidding Again!)
I’m going to play devils advocate on this one. Valentines Day is widely known as being a big holiday for couples to celebrate. However, Is it really so great for people in a couple? Is it really so bad for Singles? Let’s challenge the conventional wisdom shall we?
When you are in a couple you have to worry about:
-
Finding the perfect Flowers/Diamonds/Cars for your Sweetie
this Valentines Day (as per all the advertisements on TV and in the stores.)
-Assuming you don’t find the correct gift you will have to endure the scorn of her girlfriends when they find out you got her an apron for Valentines Day.
-Hear the stories about how one of her girlfriends has a Husband/Boyfriend/Boy Toy who really got or did something “Over the Top” and will make the box of her favorite chocolates looks really crappy in comparison.
-Worry about breaking up with your girlfriend/boyfriend as a result of unmet expectations regarding the holiday. (I know some people would file this under “Urban Legend” but I can attest it is true. I personally know a couple who broke up one year as a result of him not meeting her V-day expectations.)
-Getting asked by friends/family/etc “What are you doing/getting with/for her this Valentines Day.”
-Reading silly articles/blogs/etc about what you should or should not get her for Valentines Day.
When you are Single on Valentines Day you think about:

What Charlie Brown said “I know no one likes me. Why do they
have to have a Valentines Day to emphasize it?”
-All my couple friends go AWOL for 2 weekends while they are off celebrating Valentines Day together.
And that’s it.
If you are single, other than knowing you don’t have to participate (do anything) for the holiday you have the added benefit of knowing “You don’t HAVE TO participate .” Last I checked not having to do anything is easier than having to do something. Just ask Congress.
Of course I do realize that I am writing this primarily from the male point of view. For the female point of view just add in that you get the presents instead of buying the presents and also remove all the pressure (Guys aren’t going to have a crying fit if you don’t buy them something incredible for V-day.)
I know that my single female readers will chime in on this one. So here it what I think they should do. Buy yourself a present. It won’t be a screwed up present like a guy would get you (Because us guys suck at that sort of thing anyways.) Yeah, I know you will have to spend your own money (wah) but you will get what you always wanted Right? You can’t have everything after all. Plus you can think that “If I had a husband/boyfriend/whatever he might not let me spend money on something as frivolous as this.”
Happy Valentines Day!
Earlier this week I was at the Tuxedo place trying to decide
on what the guys should wear. While I was doing this I noticed that the staff
of store kept making Crystal laugh. I found out a little later that they were
talking about some stories about members of wedding parties doing crazy things
while out getting clothes for the wedding.
Three (short) stories came up.
In the first story the Best Man and the Groom got into a
fistfight in the middle of the Tux store. My first thought was: “How much do you
have to hate the Tux that the Groom picked to start throwing fists?” Turns out
that the Best Man said something “derogatory” about the future bride and then
the brawling started. When I asked them what did they do I was told they made
them leave. It appears that two guys beating the crap out of each other (inside the store) isn’t
really good for business. All right boys! Take this one out to the streets.
In the second story the Groom and the Bride got into a fight
and they both left while the Bride was crying. Later the tux order was
cancelled and it appears that the wedding didn’t happen. Other issues were
probably involved (I would imagine) since (again) how bad could the Tux be? In
my imagination the conversation must have gone like this. The bride says “I
don’t like how you look in that Tux.” And the Groom replies “Well, you look fat
in every dress!” Here comes the tears.
The third story was one Crystal told the Tux Staff. During
her trips to find her own wedding dress and the following trips to find the
bridesmaids dresses she heard (her words) some crazy brides. For example, she
heard one bride tell her Bridesmaid “I have the power to make your wear a
Bubble Dress!.” Bridezilla is on a bit of a Power Trip perhaps? I don’t even
know what a bubble dress is! (See pic)
All my groomsmen are pretty reasonable people and they know I’m not about to pick something crazy for us to wear (Not that there are that many crazy choices out there!) We really don’t have any crazy stories of our own. Most of the wedding planning was not very controversial. Then again, I’m not that unhappy that we don’t have those stories. After hearing those stories I think those people are crazy.
